Murray Spotlight

Every week, we feature a classic Murray moment. This week's spotlight comes from the Carnival of the Damned in The Curse of Monkey Island:

Murray: I am Murray! The all-powerful demonic skull!

Guybrush: Murray, what are you doing here?

Murray: I have been placed here to torment you! To make your journey through this carnival of the damned a NIGHTMARE of EPIC proportions!

Guybrush: Really? They made you a ride operator?

Murray: ...Shut up.

Did You Know?

  • The name "Guybrush" came from the filename of his sprite in Deluxe Paint: "guy.brush" (the .brush extension was used for art files). "Threepwood" was borrowed from the P.G. Wodehouse novels!
  • The SCUMM engine stands for "Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion" and was used in all LucasArts adventure games!
  • Murray first appeared in The Curse of Monkey Island (1997) and quickly became one of the most beloved characters in the series.
  • You can't actually die in LucasArts adventure games! It was a design philosophy — unlike those Sierra games where you die every 5 minutes. ;-)
  • Ron Gilbert has said that the Secret of Monkey Island was partly inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland and Tim Powers' novel On Stranger Tides.
